MAN CURRENTLY INCARCERATED IN GERMANY
(Jun. 3, 2020) — According to news reports Wednesday evening, a suspect in the disappearance of then-three-year-old Madeleine McCann from Portugal’s Algarve Coast has been identified.
“The suspect, who has been found guilty of a number of crimes including the abuse of children, was living in Portugal at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance,” The UK reported. He is currently incarcerated in Germany for “sexual assault offences,” Reuters reported.
On May 3, 2007, Madeleine vanished from the hotel room in which the family was staying during a vacation to Praia da Luz in southern Portugal. After parents Kate and Gerry McCann left Madeleine and her younger twin siblings asleep to have dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant, Kate discovered her eldest child missing.
German investigators believe the girl is deceased “and had determined the method used to kill McCann,” Reuters reported. However, British authorities continue to view the case as one of a missing person.
Two vehicles, a 1980 Volkswagen camper and 1993 Jaguar to which the man reportedly had access, were known to have been in the resort town at the time Madeleine’s family visited and were impounded after they were found in Germany, said.
German and British investigators have been coordinating their efforts in the case since late 2017. If she is alive, Madeleine is now 17.
